Why three minutes works

Most acute nicotine cravings peak and pass within 3 to 5 minutes whether or not you vape. The chemical urge follows a predictable wave — it rises, peaks, and falls. The Craving Crusher is built to that window.

Phase 1 — breathing uses a 4-second inhale, 6-second exhale ratio. The extended exhale activates the vagus nerve and shifts your nervous system from fight-or-flight into rest-and-digest, which is the physiological opposite of a craving spike. The protocol is drawn from cyclic-sighing breathwork research published in Cell Reports Medicine.

Phase 2 — reframing uses CBT-based prompts that rotate through cognitive defusion, acceptance, and future-self framing. Cravings convince you they’re permanent and urgent. The right thought at the right time exposes that lie.

Phase 3 — physical redirect draws from competing-response training. A short burst of physical activity, cold-water exposure, or environmental change interrupts the craving loop more effectively than thinking about it.

FAQ

How long does a nicotine craving actually last?

Most acute nicotine cravings peak and pass within 3 to 5 minutes whether or not you vape. The chemical urge follows a wave pattern — it rises, peaks, and falls. The Craving Crusher is timed to that 3-minute window so you can outlast a craving rather than feed it.

Why does the breathing exercise use a longer exhale?

Extended exhalation activates the vagus nerve and shifts your nervous system from fight-or-flight (sympathetic) into rest-and-digest (parasympathetic). The 4-second inhale, 6-second exhale ratio is drawn from cyclic-sighing breathwork research at Stanford (Cell Reports Medicine, 2022) which showed the protocol reduces physiological arousal faster than mindfulness meditation.

What if 3 minutes isn't enough?

If a craving is still strong at the end of a session, run it again. Most users find their peak craving has passed by minute 4 or 5. If you find yourself running multiple sessions in a row, pay attention to what's underneath — often hunger, fatigue, or a difficult emotion the craving is masking.

Does this tool work without internet?

Yes — once the page has loaded once, the Craving Crusher works fully offline. There are no API calls during a session. Your craving log is saved locally on your device only.

What if I vaped during the session?

It happens. The pattern of trying matters more than any single attempt. Log it, look at your trigger, and run the next one. You haven't lost progress — you've gained data.
